1. The G7 at Évian: 23 Years After the 2003 G8

From June 15–17, 2026, Évian-les-Bains (Haute-Savoie, France) will host the G7 summit, bringing together the heads of state and government of Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, alongside the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Council. This is the second time the lakeside spa town has hosted such a summit — the first was in 2003, when Russia was still participating as a G8 member.

The summit will focus on global economic imbalances and the reform of international partnership systems. Around 5,000 people are expected between official delegations, accredited journalists and organizing staff. For the region, the logistical impact will be considerable: from June 11 at midnight until June 17 at 8 PM, an unprecedented security apparatus will be in place.

🗺️
Three municipalities affected by restrictions The security apparatus primarily affects Évian-les-Bains, Neuvecelle, and Publier, which together form the "extended protection zone." Beyond this perimeter, access remains free, but standard checks may be carried out by law enforcement.

2. The Two Security Zones

The Haute-Savoie prefecture has defined two distinct perimeters around the summit venue, each with specific access rules.

Zone Perimeter Access QR code required?
🔴 Summit Zone Immediate surroundings of the Évian Resort Official accreditation only (delegations, media, staff) No — specific accreditation
🔵 Extended protection zone Évian-les-Bains + Neuvecelle + Publier Residents and authorized persons with G7 Pass Yes — mandatory for everyone
Free zone Beyond the extended perimeter Free — standard checks possible No
⚠️
Even residents who don't leave must register Important: even if you live in the extended protection zone and have no plans to leave it during the G7 period, you must still register and obtain your QR code. Registration is mandatory for all persons over 13 years of age present in the zone.

3. The G7 Pass: What Exactly Is It?

The G7 Pass is a personal, free access authorization issued as a QR code. It must be presented at all checkpoints set up at the entry and within the extended protection zone. This system is directly inspired by the one used during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which had already demonstrated its effectiveness in managing flows within a reinforced security perimeter.

  • The Pass is 100% free — no fee should ever be requested
  • It is personal: one Pass per person — it cannot be shared or transferred
  • It applies to all persons over 13 years old
  • It applies to both pedestrians and vehicle occupants — the pass is linked to the person, not the car
  • It must be presented in digital format (smartphone) or as a printed paper copy
  • Checkpoints will verify the QR code, identity, and may search vehicles
"This G7 Pass will facilitate and streamline law enforcement checks within the enhanced protection zone." — Emmanuelle Dubée, Prefect of Haute-Savoie, April 27, 2026

4. How to Get Your QR Code on pass-g7.gouv.fr

The G7 Pass application must be made exclusively online, on the official platform pass-g7.gouv.fr. The platform is expected to open registrations from early May 2026 onwards.

Plan ahead! Processing times can be long The prefecture recommends applying as soon as the platform opens in May, and ideally before June 7 to be certain of receiving your Pass in time. Do not wait until the last few days.

Step-by-step application process

  1. Go to pass-g7.gouv.fr as soon as the platform opens (planned for early May 2026)
  2. Create your file by entering your personal information (surname, first name, date of birth, address)
  3. State your reason for needing access: resident, employee, healthcare professional, shopkeeper, visitor, vacationer...
  4. Attach supporting documents corresponding to your situation (see list below)
  5. Wait for validation by the prefecture services — allow several working days
  6. Receive your QR code electronically — save it on your smartphone or print it out
  7. Present it at each checkpoint along with a valid ID document
📄
Documents generally required by profile Resident: proof of address in the zone · Employee: employer certificate or employment contract · Healthcare professional: professional ID card · Shopkeeper: business registration extract · Visitor / vacationer: booking confirmation (hotel, rental) · School student: QR code provided by the educational institution. Exact documents will be detailed when the platform opens.

5. Who Is Affected? Residents, Workers, Cross-Border Commuters, Tourists

The G7 Pass is required of all persons over 13 years old wishing to access or cross the extended protection zone. This affects a wide range of profiles:

  • Residents of Évian, Neuvecelle and Publier — even those who don't leave the zone
  • Employees working in the zone — with employer documentation
  • Healthcare professionals — doctors, nurses, pharmacists
  • Shopkeepers and tradespeople — shops remain open
  • Cross-border workers transiting through the zone to reach Switzerland
  • Tourists and vacationers with a booking in the zone
  • Students sitting baccalaureate exams — QR code issued via their school
🌍
Focus on Franco-Swiss cross-border workers Workers commuting to Switzerland via Évian are particularly affected. The prefect has confirmed there is "no intention to close the border," but checks will be real. Applying on pass-g7.gouv.fr from May is essential. Remote working is strongly recommended for those who have that option during this period.

6. Transport Disruptions: Train, Boat, Road

The G7 organization causes significant transport disruptions in the region from June 11–17 inclusive.

🚂 Train: Thonon–Évian line suspended

Rail services between Thonon-les-Bains and Évian-les-Bains will be interrupted from June 11 at midnight until June 17 inclusive. The reason: maintaining the service would have required organizing QR code checks at Évian station, creating large gatherings incompatible with the security setup. SNCF will run replacement coaches between the two stations, with no intermediate stops. Note: passengers heading toward Évian will need to present their G7 Pass at departure.

⛵ Lake Geneva: Évian jetty closed

The Évian jetty will be closed and the CGN N1 Évian–Lausanne service suspended. Connections will be rerouted to Thonon-les-Bains and Lugrin, where a temporary jetty will be set up for the occasion. A park-and-ride will be available at Lugrin to allow passengers to reach the jetty.

🚗 Road: RD1005 open with checks

The departmental road RD1005 running along Lake Geneva will remain open, but access to the extended zone will be filtered by checkpoints (QR code verification, identity check, possible vehicle search). Traffic jams are to be expected. Alternative routes will be set up to bypass the most sensitive area.

✈️
Air: Annecy and Geneva remain accessible Annecy aerodrome and Geneva international airport will remain accessible. Airspace restrictions will apply from June 10–18 for private or leisure flights.

7. Schools and Baccalaureate Exams: What's Changing

The G7 coincides with baccalaureate exam season, which has led authorities to make specific arrangements for around 600 students from Évian.

  • Lycée Anna-de-Noailles (Évian): closes from Wednesday June 10 evening (the boarding house remains open)
  • Collèges Saint-Bruno and des Rives-du-Léman: closed from June 15–17 at minimum
  • Primary and nursery schools: normal operation, except certain schools in central Évian, the Robert-Magnin school in Neuvecelle and the private Saint-Bruno school
  • Written bac exams (French, maths, philosophy, specialties): relocated to Lycée de la Versoie in Thonon-les-Bains, with dedicated school coaches
  • QR codes for students: issued directly via their schools — no individual application required
  • Oral exams after the Summit: maintained in Évian
🎓
Flexibility for G7-related delays The prefecture has indicated that some flexibility will be applied in cases of delays or absences directly linked to circulation difficulties during this period. Families will be informed directly of coach schedules by their schools.

8. Shops, Deliveries and Daily Life

Contrary to some initial concerns, shops will remain open throughout the entire perimeter affected by the security setup. Authorities nevertheless urge professionals to plan their logistics ahead of time.

🚚
Heavy goods deliveries: nighttime slots Restrictions are planned for heavy goods vehicles, particularly those carrying hazardous materials. Deliveries may be limited to nighttime windows. Shopkeepers are encouraged to build up their stock before June 11.
🚫
Festive and sporting events banned No festive, cultural, or sporting event may be organized in Évian, Neuvecelle, or Publier for the entire duration of the setup. Certain private nautical or aeronautical activities on the lake may also be prohibited.

9. Test and Verify a QR Code with DoItQR

The G7 Pass will take the form of a QR code that you'll need to present at each checkpoint. If you have any doubt about your code's readability — particularly if you've printed it at low resolution or on poor-quality paper — the DoItQR Scanner lets you test it directly from your browser, without installing any app.

  • Test the readability of your printed QR code before June 11
  • Check the encoded content — the scanner displays the URL or data contained in the code
  • Use the DoItQR Diagnostic to analyze a suspicious QR code received by email or displayed in a public place
  • Works directly in the browser — iOS and Android — no app to install
🛡️
Watch out for G7-related scams Phishing attempts using the G7 context are foreseeable: fake sites imitating pass-g7.gouv.fr, malicious QR codes distributed in the area. Use only the official platform pass-g7.gouv.fr and verify any suspicious QR code with the DoItQR Diagnostic before scanning it.
